La rumba catalana surgió a mediados de los años 50 en las comunidades gitanas de los barrios barceloneses de Gràcia, la Barceloneta y Hostafrancs, cuando músicos como Antonio González “El Pescaílla” y, poco después, Peret fusionaron la rumba flamenca andaluza con claves afrocubanas, guitarras y palmas, adaptando la palabra “rumba”, ya sinónima de fiesta, a un pulso 4/4 vibrante y callejero. Este nuevo sonido, nacido de la mezcla cultural y del espíritu festivo de los corrales gitanos, se extendió rápidamente por toda Cataluña y acabaría convirtiéndose en uno de los pocos géneros genuinamente europeos creados en el siglo XX.
